Promoting Policy for a
Public School District
In public school systems, a champion can
initiate great change. The champion can
leverage his/her effectiveness by first building
a coalition to jointly introduce a sun safety
proposal to the governing board. Board
members, administrators, teachers, parents, skin
cancer survivors, and local experts, such as
dermatologists, are candidates for inclusion in
the coalition. To the extent
possible, those who will be most closely
involved with implementing the policy should be
included in its development and supportive of
the coalition’s mission. The governing
board may then adopt a policy and direct the
Superintendent to develop procedures that
promote sun safety at all the schools within the
district.
