Sun Safety for Kids was
honored to partner with the California
Department of Health Services and the California
School Boards Association (CSBA) to develop a
CSBA sample policy on sun safety. School
governing boards will take comfort in knowing
that the policy was reviewed by the CSBA legal
department to assure appropriate compliance with
California Education Code.
CSBA provides an excellent Policy Brief to
accompany their sample policy. While the
sample policy is comprehensive and does address
the recent sun safety amendment to the
California Ed. Code, Sun Safety for Kids urges
school districts and individually governed
schools to go further than merely allowing sun
safety. In each reference to a
sun-protective behavior, we hope that in your
policy you will demonstrate a stronger
commitment to the welfare of your students and
employees by replacing the word “allow” with
“encourage,” “strongly encourage,” or “require.”
Compare the Sun Safety for Kids sample policy
with the CSBA sample and other resources listed
below to create the policy that is best for your
school or district.
